Hello. This is my first blog so it should be interesting - to me at least. Let's see how it goes. whether I actually get anything posted and whether anyone reads it.
I am currently in Swinoujscie, Poland, a small but beautiful resort town on the Baltic Sea (I think). It has an incredibly beautiful and long beach and away from the beaches it is very green and there are lots of parks. The street I am staying on and the surrounding ones are all hotels and restaurants and exactly what you would expect for a resort town anywhere - but they are all hundreds of years old and have real character. I haven't done a lot of touring around yet but I plan to do that soon, and I expect to be here for at least another week.
I arrived here by ferry from Copenhagen where I spent my first week. Copenhagen is another beautiful city with history on every corner. I think you could spend months there just touring historical palaces and towers and other sights, but it was time for me to move on - more on that in a later blog perhaps.
The flights over were great. The long one from Calgary to London was not even half full so we all had lots of room to spread out and I think everyone on the flight slept for most of it. Dinner before we went to sleep and breakfast after they woke us up were actually both quite good so I was impressed.
Now I have to tell you that I ended up leaving Kelowna without my glasses so once I got on the plane and took my contacts out I couldn't see anything which meant no movie for me and lots of sleepign. I managed to get off the plane in London and quickly followed the first group of females veering off the track as I assumed they were heading for a washroom. With contacts back in I could see again and could figure out where I was to go. I did the same thing on the flight from London to Copenhagen and at the airport in Copenhagen and got my contacts in just before we had to clear customs.
Once through customs I found my way to the train station, bought a ticket and made it to Copenhagen Central Station. At that stage I was lost - pretty dumb of me but I had the address of the hotel only and no instructions on how to get there. The first taxi driver I asked said he'd never heard of the street but assumed it was "down there" and pointed in a certain direction. I walked down there for several blocks but when I saw another hotel I had almost booked I stopped and asked them. They nicely pointed out that I was going the wrong way and had to go back to the station and head in the opposite direction. Once I knew where I was supposed to be heading it was no problem getting there and I arrived safely about 9:30 p.m. I'm only noting the time because it was still daylight and could easily have been 4 p.m. I should also note that this was my first trek with my backpack on and it felt fine. Of course I really didn't have to go all that far, even after the false start in the wrong direction, but at least I know I can handle the backpack.
My hotel was only three blocks from the Central Train Station and the same from Tivoli Gardens. Personally I'd never heard of this place but Jim Cookson and his wife told me I had to go at least for part of one day. Well as it turned out I went about 3 days/evenings and quite enjoyed it. I was thinking "gardens" and there were indeed some beautiful plants and flowers and trees and ponds throughout. However, the park is a mini Disney World and has been around for so long that it claims to have been the park that inspired Walt Disney to build his amusement parks - and you all know how I love those. There were lots of rides for kids of all ages and lots of carnival-style games. There were also at least four theatres/stages and that's where I spent most of my time. I saw a big band concert, a mini-symphony concert, a pantomime, a puppet show, and the evening extravaganza that ended with fireworks every night at 11:30. And it was no problem walking home at that time of night because the hotel was so close and because hundreds of others were always heading in the same direction. I won't say that Tivoli was the best part of Copenhagen but I will certainly say it was the biggest surprise. I had a three-day Copenhagen pass so even when I was just heading down the street I still walked through Tivoli just to see what was happening.
Okay, I'm going to stop now because this just tried to do an auto save and told me it couldn't connect to blogger.com. If this isn't going to work I really don't want to be wasting any more time with it. Hopefully it works and regardless, I will get back to you soon.
Cheers.
